One of the US’ foremost agricultural cooperatives, CHS is unique in that it is owned by farmers, ranchers, and local cooperatives across the country. The diversified business model spans multiple sectors, bridging agricultural producers with consumers. The company, originally founded in 1929 and organized as a regional cooperative with sixty affiliated local cooperatives, has grown through strategic growth and acquisitions, evolving into an agricultural powerhouse.
Most recently, CHS added eight grain assets across five states and opened a new Crop Science Research Development Center. In early 2025, the company acquired West Central Ag Services, expanding its reach even further.
CHS provides innovative agriculture solutions to farmers and retailers, operating in more than 450 communities across 16 states. The company is a major buyer and trader of grains and oilseeds, moving more than two billion bushels annually through its river, rail, and export terminals network.
The company also has an extensive energy division that delivers refined fuels throughout a network of more than 140 product terminals. Its Cenex brand has served farms, communities, and businesses since the 1930s and can be found across nineteen states.
Technologically, the new Crop Science Research Development Center, opened in 2024, is a major milestone for CHS’s technological evolution. The Randolph, Minnesota-located research center is a state-of-the-art facility that features a greenhouse with six climate-controlled bays, enabling researchers to simulate diverse growing environments and test products year-round, independent of Minnesota’s seasonal weather constraints.
The center is focused on developing and refining crop protection products, seed treatments, micronutrients, biostimulants, and other products utilizing advanced materials and sustainable design to enhance research capabilities and accelerate product development.

CHS has also embraced external collaboration to drive further tech efforts. In 2024, the company became a Sky Tier partner with North Dakota’s Grand Farm Initiative, a project dedicated to tackling agriculture’s biggest challenges through technology. The partnership supports the development of Grand Farm’s Innovation Campus, a hub for research and demonstration of next-gen agricultural technologies such as autonomy, AI, robotics, and drones.
These partnerships, projects, and technological lean-ins have come under the tenure of Todd Eyrick, vice president of IT enterprise systems and planning at CHS. Eyrick leads the company’s enterprise system transformation initiatives, focusing on enhancing real-time data access, reducing operational costs, and streamlining business processes. His leadership extends to the delivery and support of CHS United, the cooperative’s core business platform, as well as the SAP technology and analytics infrastructure that underpins CHS’s digital operations.
Since 2018, Eyrick has guided major system upgrades and digital transformation projects, ensuring not only technical oversight but alignment with broader business goals. The VP has championed the implementation of advanced analytics, real-time data solutions, and integrated business platforms. He’s helped evolve CHS’s digital operations utilizing a team of over 1,200, including contractor partners.
Prior to CHS, Eyrick spent over thirteen years at Monsanto Company, where he held several leadership positions. The experience provided a deep understanding of both the agricultural sector and the application of technology to drive business value. The leader credits his military experience as a critical piece of his career development and commitment to hard work.
The VP says that while CHS has evolved over its nearly one hundred years, the company has remained very much the same in many regards, requiring additional effort to help drive digital transformation across the organization. He saw an opportunity to leverage the company’s size and scale to its benefit.
So while change is underway, Eyrick still sees the company midway through a much broader transformation. It takes time to bring large-scale change to a Fortune 100 agricultural organization with a storied history, but the VP and his team are making significant progress.
